Toilet Training Your Puppy: A Complete Guide to Success

Bringing a new puppy home is exciting, but one of the first challenges is toilet training. Puppies don’t instinctively know where to go, so it’s our job to guide them with patience, consistency, and the right techniques!

1.      Establish a Routine

Puppies thrive on structure. Taking them out at consistent times throughout the day—especially after waking, eating, drinking, or playing—helps them understand when and where to go.

This prevents accidents and reinforces good habits early on.

2.      Choose a Designated Toilet Spot

Pick one consistent location where your puppy should relieve themselves. Whether it’s a garden, a puppy pad indoors, or a specific corner of the yard, keeping it familiar makes learning easier.

Always lead your puppy to the spot on a leash and reward them when they use it.

3.      Use Positive Reinforcement

Instead of scolding mistakes, reward successes! Puppies respond better to praise, treats, and affection when they go in the right place.

This makes toilet training a positive experience, encouraging them to repeat the correct behaviour.

4.      Watch for Signs & Act Fast

Puppies often show signals when they need to go, such as: Circling or sniffing the floor, Whining or pacing, Heading toward the door or a corner.

If you spot these signs, quickly take them outside before an accident happens!

5.      Manage Accidents Calmly

Accidents will happen, but never punish your puppy—it can make them anxious and confused. Instead:

·         Clean the area thoroughly with an enzyme-based cleaner to remove odours (so they don’t return to the spot).

·         If you catch them mid-accident, calmly redirect them to their toilet area.

·         Be patient—puppies learn through consistency, not punishment.

6.      Crate Training for Overnight Success

A crate can be a useful tool for housebreaking, as puppies don’t like to soil their sleeping space. Keep the crate comfortable, and take them outside immediately after waking up.

7.      Stick to a Feeding Schedule

Unpredictable meals lead to unpredictable bathroom habits! Feed your puppy at consistent times each day to make toilet training easier.

Toilet training takes patience and consistency, but every pup will learn with the right guidance! Stay positive, celebrate small wins, and soon your puppy will master their new routine.
